Over a total of 226 hours volunteering, Gleeds Shanghai visited four primary schools in Lixin County, an impoverished area in China’s Anhui province, as part of The British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai’s ‘Bright Eyes’ scheme. Established nearly 10 years ago, it provide children with free eye testing and prescription glasses.

Describing the experience, Becky Xu, Senior Secretary at Gleeds Shanghai, said “We were so happy to be able to help the children tackle this problem. Being able to study is extremely important to them, as very often it is the only way to change their families’ fortunes.”

In India, Gleeds teams from its Mumbai, Pune, and Bangalore offices delivered half day workshops in local schools for students aged between 14 – 17 years. These provided an introduction to the construction industry, the opportunities within it, and a range of fun activities.

Over the coming weeks, Gleeds Brisbane will be part of a team of construction industry businesses helping to create a communal garden in the town’s Australian Catholic University through offering their free time and expertise.

In November Gleeds Hong Kong’s team are holding a ‘conservation day’, where they will clean up local beaches and areas of natural beauty. In Hong Kong conservation is a major concern, with its famed ‘pink’ dolphins that are commonly found in the waters between Hong Kong Island and Macau increasingly endangered.

Discussing their plans, Gleeds Hong Kong’s Community Champion Matt Harris, said: “Although we’re a small team in a big place, we’re looking forward to doing our bit towards preserving Hong Kong’s natural beauty.”
