Spending Review & Autumn Statement: Should the industry feel sceptical about the announced improvements?

Following the delivery of Chancellor George Osborne’s Spending Review and Autumn Statement, Gleeds analyses the government’s spending plans for the next 4 years and their impact on the construction industry.

On paper, the measures are good news as the Chancellor announced increased capital budgets across the education, health and energy departments. The Department for Transport’s budget has also increased considerably and the residential sector will also receive a good portion of capital funding with a special focus on affordable housing.

Although the construction industry has much to feel optimistic about, the Chancellor’s promises could feel ambitious when balanced against issues such as the skills crisis. The already stretched industry may struggle to find the skilled labour required to keep up with demand.
