Gleeds was appointed by Sport England as programme manager and monitor for its ‘Primary Spaces’ school initiative. The scheme aims to increase physical activity and introduce the fundamentals of sport to primary school students, encouraging participation in sport into their adult life.
Gleeds facilitated the procurement of contractors across the country in 600 primary schools, building new play facilities devoted to physical activity or adapting existing space.
Primary Spaces used £18m of funds received from the Olympic Legacy fund to help primary schools with little or no outside space make the most of what is available.
As well as being used for the construction work, the funds will also help staff and volunteers at the schools with information on how best to use the new facilities and equipment.
